I read Room in one sitting during a stormy afternoon at the cottage. With an active four-year-old and several house guests underfoot, that should tell you something about how riveting the latest offering from London, Ontario author, Emma Donoghue, is.

This is a novel based on the true and little-known story of the 1851 Cideville witch trial. This witch trial was unlike others of the same century, as the witch was the plaintiff and not the defendant.

London Poetry Slam

LONDON POETRY SLAM, showing the love since 2007, is an energetic spoken word competition where the emphasis is on speaker/audience interaction. Judges are randomly selected from the audience and display their score, out of ten, immediately after each performance. Performers are judged on both content and delivery. Audience members are encouraged to be vocal, enthusiastic and engaging towards both the judges, competitors, and the "Rat Bastard". The spoken words, or rants, are limited to three minutes, with the "Rat Bastard" penalizing a one-half point deduction for going over the limit. Last night was "anything goes" which included instruments and props.

Amos and the Cosmos is self described as “a rollicking journey through America’s heart and soul” and it is certainly that. The novel describes the coming of age of Amos Boris Lardowitz who matures from an introspective teenager into an enlightened adult.
